Self-Serve Kiosk Sales To Hit $1.6 Trillion By 2013
Written by Fred J. AunJuly 8th, 2009
North American self-service transactions will top $775 billion this year and will likely beat $1.6 trillion by 2013, according to a new report from the IHL Group. Although this growth isn't being sparked by customer demand, IHL found that shoppers have grown accustomed to the do-it-yourself style of buying stuff. "Most consumers have adapted to self-service as a way of life," said IHL Group Lead Retail Analyst Lee Holman.
The findings of the research were on track with IHL's expectations. "I'd be lying if I said anything surprised me about it," said IHL President Greg Buzak. "Consumers now understand it is a way of life and have stopped complaining about it being a lack of service."

Our Comment SPAM system is getting very aggressive these days and has been blocking legitimate comments. If you post a comment and don't see it appear within 2 hours or so, can you please send a heads-up to customer-service@storefrontbacktalk? Ideally, please include the time you posted the comment. That will allow us to try and hunt for it. Thanks! P.S. We're working on fixing the system, but we don't want to lose any valuable comments in the meantime.

There are still a number of items that make kiosk check-outs an aggravating experience. At Lowe’s I finish scanning everything, I swipe my credit card and then the kiosk asks me to enter the last four digits of my credit card. I just swiped my card – how does this make sense? If it asked for my zip code to make sure this wasn’t a stolen card, that would make sense. It annoys me every time I have to reenter something.
